Project Overview

For my sister and brother-in-law’s first wedding anniversary, I created an anniversary gift in augmented reality. This gift was more personal and drove participant interaction, more so than an emailed card. Sending an AR gift is convenient for those who appreciate the sentiment while not wanting to have another thing to clutter our spaces.

Prototype Demonstration:

Motivations

User Interaction

Recipients can interact and open this just as they could a card or box

Immediate Delivery

Can be sent over email or text and shared without the delay of the postal or third-party service

Multiple Points or Presence

Convenient to share with family and friends who live out-of-state

Ease of Maintenance

There is nothing that requires physical space, and can be updated on the fly

Design Evolution

The wedding invitations were styled in black, white, and gold, so I wanted to incorporate this into the design of the gift box. As with any box, the trigger to open was centered around the lid, so it could be opened from any angle. Figures were isolated and altered to inhabit the 3D space, just as they were depicted on the day.

Lessons Learned

The model scales are difficult to discern on the computer from when the model is placed in the environment. The box on my computer screen was tiny, but that dwarfed my coffee table when previewed on my phone. My AR scene was not affected by ambient lighting, so elements had to be brightened in Blender before being exported. Having a cluttered surface aids in anchoring the scene to one spot.

  • Test the scale of objects at various stages of the project
  • Some AR applications [Adobe Aero here] do not account for environmental lighting
  • Models slide on clean surfaces making it difficult to view them in the round
